This Art Hive, as part of the 6th Virginia McClure Ceramic Biennale and led by the collective: Everything Already Present, will invite participants to join us in exploring, researching, and developing local materials. The Art Hive will begin with a short reflection and open discussion reflecting on the labour in processing your own ceramic materials with an emphasis on Local Clay. Participants will then be invited to explore unfired clay sculptures through the medium of seed balls.
Seed balls are an ancient technique often used today to re-naturalize areas that have been damaged by humans, forest fires, or desertification. The workshop will teach participants this simple approach to preparing a number of native flower seeds in the form of a seed ball using local clay, soil, and milkweed fibres. There are many intended functions for seed balls but the main intention here is to practice giving back to areas where we gather local clay and other local materials.
