The artist will give a guided tour of her exhibition starting at 6:30 pm.
Shadows Between Us is an ongoing project that explores Kristi Chen’s responses to her familial archives. Inspired by stories of her great-grandparents’ extraordinary skills in vegetation harvesting, basket weaving and Chinese Lingnan-style painting, Kristi Chen creates a dialogue between past and future through her work. Objects in the exhibition, ranging from woven pieces to garden sculptures and scented artefacts to furniture, draw on materials, techniques and knowledge from the artist’s ancestral past, while incorporating synthetic materials symbolizing the evolution of that heritage.
Kristi Chen is a multidisciplinary artist who uses sculpture and installation to explore the nature of identity, diaspora and methods of recultivating lost family archives. She graduated from OCAD University in 2021 with a BFA in Sculpture/Installation. This is her first solo exhibition in Montreal.
