Join us for the opening of Winter Garden, and immersive exhibtion by Jaimie Robson and Maya Ersan (Mere Phantoms)!
Inspired by shadow puppet theatre and early cinema, the artist duo Mere Phantoms combines drawing, cut-paper silhouettes and porcelain to create immersive environments. Visitors animate the work using portable light sources to play with the scale, size and intensity of the shadows that are cast. Winter Garden refers to large 18th and 19th century conservatories—‘fantasy bubbles’—that housed tropical plants and “exotic foliage” from all over the world. The exhibition links this historical dispossession of plants and animals to questions of migration, displacement and housing.
