Mnemonic Devices
Artist-guided gallery tour: Thursday, December 1 at 6:30 pm
Art hive with Alexia McKindsey (in-person): Saturday, December 17, 10:30 am to 1 pm
The McClure Gallery is pleased to announce a solo-exhibition by emerging, Montreal-based artist Alexia McKindsey. Mnemonic Devices explores the notion of place as a vessel. The home has become an important facet of her work, where it acts as a mnemonic device that carries the traditions, memories, and experiences of the people living within it. This notion is extended to other places that have the potential to absorb such qualities, for example, a beloved home away from home or a site or place often travelled or frequented. McKindsey works with archives, comprised of photographs, personal artifacts, traditions, stories and memories the artist has heard told through time.
The artist will offer an in-person guided tour of the exhibition on December 1st, which will also be diffused virtually. Please join us for an in-person Art Hive with McKindsey on December 17, in which the artist will guide participants through the basics of the rug-making technique of latch hooking. Participants will be invited to learn and experiment with the medium by creating their own small rug using designs provided by the artist or of their own choosing. Art hives are free art-making workshops open to everyone. No previous art-making experience is required. The Visual Arts Centre is a community art centre that operates The McClure gallery, an arts outreach program and a school of art.
